Estimate annual, monthly and weekly Council Tax from an English billing authority and valuation band using official Band D data.
This free Council Tax calculator estimates a 2026/27 charge for any of England's 296 billing authorities. It starts with the official area Band D figure and applies the statutory ratio for Band A, B, C, D, E, F, G or H.
It does not connect to a council account, retrieve a live balance or confirm what a particular household must pay. Use the result as a budgeting estimate and check the council-issued bill for the account amount.
Estimate Council Tax by authority and band
Choose an English billing authority and valuation band. This uses the official 2026/27 Band D area figure and England's statutory band ratio.
Choose both fields to see an estimated annual, monthly and weekly amount.
How Council Tax band ratios work
Band D is the standard comparison point. In England, the other valuation bands are set as proportions of Band D: A is 6/9, B is 7/9, C is 8/9, D is 9/9, E is 11/9, F is 13/9, G is 15/9 and H is 18/9. The calculator multiplies the selected authority's Band D figure by the relevant ratio, rounds to pence, then divides that annual estimate by 12 and 52 for monthly and weekly equivalents.
Why the estimate may differ from your bill
The official source is an area measure for a Band D dwelling occupied by two adults. Some authorities contain different parish, town or special-expense amounts. Household circumstances and council decisions can also affect the final account.
Monthly instalments may be spread over 10 months, 12 months or another agreed schedule.
Discounts, disregarded residents, exemptions and Council Tax Reduction affect the bill, not the valuation band.
Premiums can apply to some empty or second homes.
The billing council's current bill remains the authoritative account record.
Use the property's official band
This calculator needs a known band and does not find one from an address. Check the published Council Tax band using the free GOV.UK Council Tax band lookup. The lookup and the official challenge route are free. Only the Valuation Office, part of HM Revenue and Customs, can change a Council Tax band in England.
Discounts and band challenges are different
A council decides billing support such as discounts, exemptions and Council Tax Reduction. A valuation-band challenge concerns the property's band and is handled by the Valuation Office. A high estimate does not prove that a band is wrong, and this calculator does not assess eligibility or submit an application or challenge.
Calculator, checker and evidence review
Use this calculator when you know the billing authority and band and want an estimated charge. Use the band checker when you want to start with an England postcode and review published band context. Neither result changes the official band or guarantees a bill change, reduction, refund or saving.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this Council Tax calculator?
It provides an estimate from the official 2026/27 area Band D figure and England's statutory band ratios. It is not an account lookup or an exact household bill.
Why might my Council Tax bill be different?
Parish or town precepts, local billing arrangements, discounts, disregarded residents, Council Tax Reduction, premiums, instalment schedules and council corrections can change the amount shown on a bill.
What if I do not know the property's Council Tax band?
Use the free GOV.UK Council Tax band lookup for a property in England. The calculator needs the published band but does not retrieve it from a council account.
Does a high estimate mean my Council Tax band is wrong?
No. A charge estimate and a valuation-band assessment answer different questions. Bill amount alone does not prove that a property band is wrong.
Does the calculator apply Council Tax discounts?
No. It shows the undiscounted area estimate. Your billing council assesses discounts, disregards, exemptions and Council Tax Reduction using household and account information.
Can MyCouncilTaxCheck change my band or submit a challenge?
No. MyCouncilTaxCheck is independent. Only the Valuation Office can change a Council Tax band in England, and the official challenge route is free.
