About MyCouncilTaxCheck

Independent Council Tax band information and evidence guidance for homes in England.

MyCouncilTaxCheck is an independent service. We are not part of or affiliated with GOV.UK, HM Revenue and Customs, the Valuation Office, the Valuation Tribunal or any local council. The current public service covers England only.

What the service does

The Council Tax band checker helps you find and review the published band for an address. The Council Tax calculator provides an estimated charge using published local figures. An evidence assessment is different: it organises property facts, nearby comparison signals and limitations to help you consider whether further review may be worthwhile.

A published band, a charge estimate and an evidence assessment answer different questions. None of them changes a property's official band or proves that a band is incorrect. Results are advisory, not legal, tax, surveying or valuation advice.

Information and evidence

We use official public information and, where applicable, appropriately licensed commercial property data. Our approach is cautious: comparison evidence is considered in context, data gaps are identified and wider-area examples are not treated as proof about an individual home. Read more about Council Tax evidence and methodology or inspect the official-source methodology behind our England Band D dataset.

Source information can be incomplete, delayed or affected by local variation. Users should check important details against the relevant council and official records before acting.

Official routes are free

You can look up a Council Tax band on GOV.UK for free. If you decide to proceed, the official Council Tax band challenge route is also free. Only the Valuation Office, part of HM Revenue and Customs, can change a Council Tax band in England. MyCouncilTaxCheck does not submit a challenge or promise a band change, refund, reduction or saving.
